A Book and a Hug is a website that recommends books based on interest, age, and reading ability. Some unique features of the site that can aid in book selection include:

  • Read Around the World Map: Allows you to choose a continent and a country to view books with characters from the selected country.
  • Reader Types: book recommendations based on “reading personalities”
  • Book searches for preteen readers who are reading above grade level using the Advanced Search selecting a Reading Level age range and selecting “Careful Content.”

Book Awards

The following book awards for children and young adults are awarded annually. The list of nominees can be a valuable resource when seeking out new selections for your library collection:

National Awards:

Batchelder Award: Awarded to the best children’s book originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States

Belpré Medal: Awarded to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth

Caldecott Medal: Awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children

Coretta Scott King Awards: Awarded to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values

Geisel Award: Awarded to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers

Newbery Medal: Awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children

Orbis Pictus Award: Awarded to the author of the best nonfiction book for children

Sibert Medal: Awarded to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational book

YALSA Nonfiction Award: Awarded to the best nonfiction book published for young adults (ages 12-18)

State Awards:

Georgia Picturebook Award: Awarded to the best picturebook based on votes from the students of Georgia from a list of books nominated by Georgia teachers and media specialists

Georgia Book Award: Awarded to the best chapter book based on votes from the students of Georgia from a list of books nominated by Georgia teachers and media specialists

Georgia Peach Book Award: Awarded to the best literature for high school age students based on votes from the students of Georgia from a list of books nominated by Georgia public librarians and school media specialists
