Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is a competition held throughout the state of Georgia each year in which students read and are quizzed on books nominated for Georgia book awards. Elementary and middle school students read the chapter books nominated for the Georgia Book Award. High school students read the Georgia Peach Teen Book Award nominees. Competitions are held at the district, regional, division, and state levels. Clayton County Public Schools hosts a district Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl each school year.

Media Events

There are a number of opportunities to promote reading and media skills throughout the year. Below are some of the media events that are available with links to more information:

Georgia Student Media Festival

The Georgia Student Media Festival is an annual opportunity for students to demonstrate their technical abilities while they are learning. Completed projects are submitted to the school Media Specialist for entry in the district festival. Entries receiving a Superior rating automatically advance to the state festival. Production types include: audio podcast, live action, animation, sequential stills, interactive stills, and website. Project entries can be instructional, informational, documentary, persuasive, tell a story, or provide entertainment.

Georgia Peach Book Award for Teen Readers

The purpose of the Georgia Peach Award is to highlight and promote the best current young adult literature for Georgia high school age students, to encourage young adults to read and to promote the development of cooperative school and public library services for young adults. Teens vote for their favorite books out of the year’s top 20 nominees at their high schools and local public libraries.

El día de los libros (Book Day)

Date: April 30

Día also known as El día de los niños (Children’s Day) and El día de los libros (Book Day), is a community-based family literacy initiative since its founding in 1996.

Including a Día literacy celebration at your school can start an annual tradition of celebrating literacy, language, and culture with children and their families.

Georgia Children’s Book Awards and Conference on Children’s Literature

The purpose of the Georgia Children’s Book Awards is to foster a love of reading in the children of Georgia, and to introduce them to books of literary excellence. The award is given in two categories – picture books and middle grade novels. Books are nominated for the awards by teachers and media specialists from the state of Georgia. The final lists of nominees are selected by a committee of teachers and media specialists

January – Conference registration opens

January to February – Voting window for Picture and Chapter Books

March – Children’s Literature Conference in Athens, Georgia
